World’s Most Liveable Cities







According to a survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Melbourne (Australia) is the most liveable city in the world. It has topped the list for the fifth consecutive year. The survey looked at liveable criteria – healthcare, education, stability, culture, environment and infrastructure – of 140 cities. Each city was rated out of 100. Melbourne received a score of 97.5, with its low crime rate a key factor in retaining the title.

What are the trends?



1.       Since 2010, average liveability across the world has fallen by 1%, led by a 2.2% fall in the score for stability and safety.


2.       57 of the cities surveyed have seen declines in liveability over the last 5 years.


3.       Deterioration in previously stable regions, such as Europe and North America, caused by incidents like the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris and civil unrest in a number of US cities.


4.       Tokyo ranked 15th, Paris 29th and New York 55th. Harare, Kathmandu and Dubai recorded the most improved scores.


5.       After Melbourne, 4 more Australian cities on list Adelaide (5th), Sydney (7th), Perth (8th), Brisbane (18th).


6.       7 Chinese cities improved their ranking because of a lower threat from civil unrest; Beijing moved up five places to 69.


7.       Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests last year resulted in a 3.2% decline in liveability.
